Five Finds – Owls in Picture Books

March 9, 2019March 5, 2019 Jane the Raincity Librarian Post a comment

owls

Whoooo doesn’t love owls, especially when they’re the stars of wonderful picture books? If you’re doing an owl-themed story time, or have a budding ornithologist at home, here are five picture books to check out.

Wow! Said the Owl

wow

A curious owl decides to stay awake all day, and discovers that the world is full of all sorts of wondrous colours. But to an owl, the starry night sky is still the most beautiful sight of all. This would be a great addition to a colour-themed story time, too.

Little Owl’s Orange Scarf

oeange

Little Owl’s mummy has made him a new scarf, and Little Owl is not impressed. His new scarf is too itchy, too long, and far too orange! Mummy says Little Owl has to wear his new scarf to keep warm, so what is a stubborn Little Owl to do? From the author/illustrator of the equally charming Small Elephant’s Bathtime.

lost

Little Owl Lost

This winner of a picture book has been in my storytime rotation for years, and has never let me down. Little Owl (no relation to the owl with the orange scarf) is lost! Can a well-meaning if not particularly bright squirrel help Little Owl find his mommy?

babies

Owl Babies

Another beloved classic, Owl Babies follows a family of owlets as they wait for their mother to return from her nightly hunt.

hoot

Hoot Owl – Master of Disguise

This is a must-have for preschool and school-aged story times – it’s the story of a hapless owl whose hunting and disguise skills aren’t quite as masterful as he might think they are. A hilarious story of perseverance and self-belief with a charming surprise ending, as Hoot Owl discovers the perfect (and most delicious) prey of all.

Whoooo is your favourite picture book owl?
