Family Literacy Week 2023 – Number Books for Little Counters

February 16, 2023January 27, 2023 Jane the Raincity Librarian Post a comment

It’s never too early to introduce basic numeracy skills like counting and numeric awareness, and these board books and picture books are perfect for sharing with babies and toddlers.

STACK THE CATS : Cats of all shapes and sizes scamper, stretch and yawn across the pages of this adorable counting book. And every now and then, they find themselves in the purrfect fluffy stack!

BALANCE THE BIRDS : A follow-up to Stack the Cats, Balance the Birds is about balance and relative size. When birds spot a tree and decide to land on its branches, the readers can help them find the perfect balance. Like Stack the Cats, Balance the Birds introduces key early math skills for toddlers.

LET’S ADD UP! : If you ask a grown-up to add up 8 cars + 2 trucks, they’ll probably say that’s 10 vehicles. And it’s true. But these 10 young friends know what else those things add up to: a race What will they do with 7 robes + 3 capes? Or 6 pots + 4 pans? 10 simple objects can have infinite possibilities.

QUACK and COUNT! : Slip, slide, leap, and dive with a family of seven lively ducklings as they get ready to fly for the very first time. It’s an adventure little ones will want to recount again and again!\

FISH EYES : Brightly colored fish paired with interactive die-cut pages introduce young children to counting and basic addition.

ONE SPOTTED GIRAFFE : Spreads filled with realistic depictions of colorful creatures — everything from pandas to lemurs — entice readers to count the animals, then flip the flap to reveal a corresponding pop-up numeral. And then the surprise: the numeral looks just like the animal — fur, spots, stripes, and all!

NUMBERS : From kites, cakes, and candy kisses, young readers can count from 1 to 1,000 using illustrations of fun, familiar objects.

1, 2, 3, PEAS : Count from one to one hundred in this pea-filled board book that’s packed with bright, bold numbers and playful number-themed scenes.

What are some other number books you’d recommend for the littlest counters?
