Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Podcasts I’ve Listened To Recently

March 26, 2019March 26, 2019 Jane the Raincity Librarian 7 comments

top-ten-tuesday

It’s been a while since I last participated in Top Ten Tuesday – in fact, my last post was all the way back in November 2018, when I shared ten picture books about thankfulness.

I’m back today to talk yet again about my love of podcasts. I’ve written about podcasts before – you can check out some of my previous podcast recommendations in these posts: What I’ve Been Listening to Recently, What I’ve Been Listening to Recently Part II, and Top Ten Podcasts for the Bookishly Inclined.

For the longest time I was convinced that podcasts weren’t for me – I’d tried I few, but they never really grabbed me or held my interest. As I’ve mentioned before, I can’t stand chatty podcasts, in which hosts chitter and chatter and ad lib – these kinds of recordings just drive me mad, and I want to jump into the recording booth and shout – get to the point!

Thankfully, this is a golden age for podcasts, and there truly are series covering just about any subject you could possibly imagine. I’ve mentioned some of my favourite series in those previous posts, but I have managed to find a few more series to share with you today.

Now, I typically prefer investigative, limited-run podcasts that tackle a single case, topic or event, and I seek out series that are informative and will get me thinking. So, if you have a similar taste in podcasts, these series might appeal to you as well. I don’t have ten series to share with you this time around, but be sure to check out my previous posts for even more great suggestions for your listening pleasure.

The Drop Out

The story of the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her blood testing company Theranos is as gripping and at times as unbelievable as any fictional book or film. This investigative miniseries is part of a wave of renewed interest in this dramatic tale of larger than life personalities, fraud and Silicon Valley.

Broken Harts

In 2018, married couple Sarah and Jennifer Hart and their six adopted children went over a cliff in the family’s vehicle. There were no survivors. Was it a terrible accident? A premeditated murder-suicide? A desperate spur of the moment act by a mentally unwell mother? How could something so terrible happen to a family that seemed on the outside to be so normal, happy, even perfect?  An interesting look at how social media can distort reality and relationships, as well as the complex realities of interracial adoptions in the United States.

Sawbones – A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine

Hosts Dr. Sydnee McElroy and her husband Justin take listeners on a weekly tour of medicinal knowledge, theories and treatments throughout history. With a blend of science and humour, this is an always information, often hilarious look at how concepts of health have changed over centuries – and how, sometimes, they haven’t.

Buried Truths Season 2

Buried Truths

In 1962, a black teenager named A. C. Hall was mistakenly identified as stealing a gun in Macon, Georgia. His story is one of police prejudice, racial stereotyping and profiling, and community activism that reverberates to the present day.

Discovery

Brought to us by the clever folks at the  BBC World Service, this weekly science-based podcast series touches on just about anything you could imagine. Recent topics have included a mobile app designed to warn Californians of upcoming earthquakes, the growing hazards of wildfires, and the Arabic scientists who is seen as the father of modern optics.

OK, so that’s only five podcasts and not ten, but that’s all I’ve got to share with you this time around – once I find a new-to-me podcast I love, it takes me a while to binge my way through all previous episodes!

What are some of your favourite podcasts to listen to?

I’ve never been a huge podcast person (unless you count listening to Carlton Cuse back in the “Lost” days….), but my friend got me hooked on “Cabin Pressure” with Benedict Cumberbatch and now I listen to it constantly! I would definitely recommend it!

Thanks for these recommendations! I have a long trip coming up; lots of listening time. I found both Believed and The Dream engrossing.
