So many picture books, so little time!! I’ve got another pile of illustrated stories to share with you on the blog this week, some new, and some just new to me. I really like sharing a mixture of bright, shiny new picture books as well as those that might have flown under the radar a bit, or that I think might be hidden gems just waiting to be rediscovered. Having a desk that’s just a few steps from a wall of picture book shelves certainly makes my writing life easier – all I have to do is close my eyes and pull out a handful of books, and I’m pretty much guaranteed to find at least a few great titles!
Here’s what I’ve got coming up on the blog this week:
- A picture book perfectly suited for Vancouverites like myself (it is summer, isn’t it?)…..
- A cheeky little monkey has a bit of fun at the expense of his forgetful elephant friend, but the good times won’t last forever….
- A thoroughly modern “where does a baby come from?” book that recognises that not all baby stories start with “when a mummy and a daddy love each other very much”….
On the grown-up reading front, I’m currently working my way through my first Anne Perry novel, a murder mystery set in Victorian England. Thomas Pitt is a police inspector, and Charlotte Pitt is his wife, who assists him with his cases (though not always with his blessing). I haven’t finished this one yet, but I’m really quite enjoying it. The historical setting feels very real, and the murder plot is engaging, as Thomas and Charlotte pursue two very different possible paths of deduction. I don’t think I’ve figured out who is the murderer is yet, but I do have my suspicions!

You have to learn to love the rain, or at least not let it drive you crazy, when you live in the Pacific Northwest!
I love that Puddle book, too, and really should take time to read a few mysteries for adults. I know of Anne Perry, but am not sure I’ve read any of them. There are several good mystery authors that tell a great story. Thanks, Jane!

I love working with preschoolers, they are just so much fun – so curious and energetic. Lots of fun and so rewarding.

Picture books are my jam, thankfully I work in a library so I’ve always got new books coming across my desk.

Yes, it;s such a lovely story, and a create celebration of imagination and creativity. Plus, when you live in a rainy city, you just have to suck it up and get used to the wet, or you’ll go a little mad!

You always have a nice selection of picture books- I thnk Puddle looks cute. And I read one of Anne Perry’s Christmas novels a couple winters ago but not any of the Pitt series. I love the timeframe though…
I’ve read quite a few of the Anne Perry mysteries. She’s a good writer, and I did enjoy those books. Fred Forgets has such an appealing cover!

Aww, Fred Forgets looks super cute! I take my nephew/niece (they’re preschoolers) to the library all the time and I’m always looking out for good picture book recommendations.

What Makes A Baby looks charming! I’m always on the lookout for good sex and body books for my kids.
Puddle looks so joyful. I read What Makes a Baby. I agree that they explained things in a way that doesn’t limit how families begin to one strict way. I think it handles the topic of birth well for younger curious readers though some things are quite vague. Vague may be just the thing though for youngers since they can ask for clarification if they want more info, but will likely be satisfied with the minimum.
I haven’t read any Anne Perry for such a long time. I remember that I used to love the Pitts. As a fellow Vancouverite, I’m not sure if this really is summer. I can’t believe how cool it is!
