Poetry Friday : To My Mother

May 9, 2025May 9, 2025 Jane the Raincity Librarian 7 comments

Mother’s Day is this weekend, so a very happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas, Mommies, Mums, Mothers, Grandmothers, Nanas, Omas, Step-mothers, Foster mothers, Aunties and other Mother-figures out there! It’s the hardest job in the entire world, but absolutely, without a doubt, the best.

My baby does not look like this anymore – in fact, he’s turning SIX this month, and will tell you that he is very much not a baby, thank you! Like the mother in this week’s poem, I too will one day look back on unforgotten times, and listen for the sound of his little feet tapping along the floor.

Similarly, my mum has always been my biggest fan, reading all of my writing before it’s submitted, whether complicated, long-winded essays for high school and college, or bouncing board book texts about baby animals. And while she often gives helpful constructive feedback, she’s always quick with praise, and has always been my greatest cheerleader.

And to anyone who’s missing their mama or mother figure today, I hold you in my heart. Father’s Day is a tough one for me, and I know the grief of losing a parent. It doesn’t matter how old you (or they) are – losing a parent is always hard. Know that there are others out there thinking of you, and sending you love and positive thoughts. <3

And I couldn’t resist – a cheeky wee haiku for anyone who’s ever loved their child more than words could ever express, while simultaneously wishing they would just go to sleep already!

Children’s author and poet Sarah Grace Tuttle hosts Poetry Friday this week!

Lovely thoughts for Mother’s Day. Right now I’m watching my 3 month old grandson fall asleep, like I watched his father do the same.

What lovely pictures to accompany this lovely post! Your mom sounds amazing (and I’m sorry about the loss of your dad.)
The haiku is sweet, funny, and true. 😀

Jane, your photos share the joy of motherhood. I hope yesterday brought good cheer. Your haiku made me smile.
