Poetry Friday: SNOW!

February 6, 2025February 6, 2025 Jane the Raincity Librarian 13 comments

It’s been a c-c-c-c-cold few weeks here in the Pacific Northwest, with temperatures well below 0 (that’s 32F for my Yankee readers), and there’s snow on the ground! Now, while you might think that we Canadians are used to snow, that stereotype doesn’t actually apply to my part of the country, where we typically only get snow once or twice each winter. It’s a real novelty for us, and a source of great excitement, at least for the kiddos (less so for the grownups who have to drive in the slipper stuff, since very few people have actual snow tires). Of course, I just had to write a snow-themed haiku to celebrate the snow season!

What’s the weather like in your part of the world? Are you bundled up and shivering like we are out here??

It sure is pretty though!

If you missed my Poetry Friday post from last week, I shared the exciting news that I have officially become a published poet – check it out!

Jane, beautiful! I do like snow, but we have it even more rarely than you. “the snowflake ballet” is a perfect image!

No matter how dreary I’m feeling, or how cold it is outside, I always delight in snow. Your haiku captures some of that wonder. You’re right– It’s as if the very air comes alive with dancing! After months of minimal snow, we’re definitely on a snowy track now and I’m loving the snowfall and the winter scenery. I’ll definitely be watching the ballet tonight as we’re predicted to get another 4-8 inches with more later in the week 🙂

It’s cold here in the midwest, but I haven’t had too many complaints about winter this year — if I can say, “Better than last year!” I count myself lucky. 🙂
Love your snowflake ballet, and your photo is so pretty!

True!! And I know I’ll be moaning about the grey skies and endless rain when we’re back to our regularly-scheduled Pacific Northwest winter weather, so I can’t really complain. The cold brings the precious sunshine, which I’ll happily take!

I love the ‘swirl and twirl’ of snow when we have it, Jane, and lately, it’s been warm, warmer than usual. Now, cold again, & a bit felll during the night, but sunshine melted it already. We have cold coming but again, just a bit of snow, I guess like you!

This is lovely, Jane! I’m in Minnesota, US, and we got a few inches this morning. I hurried out to make a quick video clip of me introducing my picture book about snow that comes out later this year. I love “float and flounce!”

Funnily enough I’ve been learning a lot about Minnesota recently, since two of my son’s favourite Youtubers are from Minnesota (one is a snake channel, the other is a rock hounding channel, ha ha!). We feel like honorary Minnesotans!

Your haiku is just perfect! Love thinking about a snow ballet…and hoping we get at least one more here in Ohio!

I think we’re done with snow here now – the weather forecast looks like we’ll be back to our regularly schedule winter rain. 😉

Jane, I am surprised that you only get minimal amount of snow. It is cold here even with bright sunshine. The snow has receded but there may be a snowflake ballet in the future. Love the idea that snowfall is like a ballet of twirls, swirls, and whirls.

I know! People think of Canada as cold and snowy, but really, we’re more like Seattle than the rest of the country – rarely snowy, usually wet and grey, ha ha. The great wet coast!

My comment flew through cyberspace so here I am again writing a new response. I love the photos you shared. I was surprised that you get only a minimal amount of snow. It is cold but sunny here today. Who knows, we make get some of the swirly, twirly, and whirly snow you see.

I definitely miss the sunshine – we get so many months of grey skies, I treasure every sunny day, even if it is freezing cold, too!
