Poetry Friday: The Blink of An Eye

The blink of an eye

An entire life can change

Try to hold on tight

What a week.

A family member had a bad fall this week, and hit their head on the pavement, hard. One minute they were on their feet, the next they were sprawled on the ground in a spreading pool of blood. It was traumatic, to say the least. Thank God everyone is alright – a quick ride to the local hospital in an ambulance, some tests and examinations, a tetanus shot and a row of stitches to close up a deep gash.

It was scary, but miraculously we’re all OK. Shaken, bruised, sore and battered, but OK.

Hold your loved ones extra close, and give them a big hug for me – life can change in the blink of an eye, and all too often there’s nothing we can do about it. Just hold on tight – to yourself, to each other, to this crazy rollercoaster we call life.

Also – while the news can be full of horror and misery, I’m repeatedly reminded that individual human beings are, by and large, good. When my family member fell, strangers rushed over to help. A young first attendent from a nearby construction site used a pressure bandage to staunch the bleeding, and checked for other injuries. The owner of a nail spa ran out with towels, a man picking up his lunch brought over a bottle of water, and another lady helped us into a chair while we waited for the ambulance. It was beautiful and inspiring and reminded me that there is still so much good in this world, in average, everyday people like you and me. There’s still good, and it’s worth fighting for.

And because this has been a bit of a heavy one, here’s a photo of my kiddo from earlier in the week, living his best life on a gorgeous fall day.

I hope everyone has a safe, happy, and healthy week – and Happy Thanksgiving to any fellow Canadians!!

So sorry to hear about the accident! Sounds very scary. You are so right about life changing in the blink of an eye and the importance of holding dear ones close. So inspiring to hear about those strangers who were quick to help. Thanks for reminding us that there are indeed good people in the world — easy to forget in these troubling times when all else seems bleak. Beautiful photo!

Jane, that is terrifying! I am so glad that everyone is ok. It is so scary when someone you care about is hurt. You make a great point about remembering to give an extra hug to those you love every day. Best wishes for continued healing.

Oh, Jane! I gasped at the opening, so scary. :/ I’m so glad and relieved that everyone is okay. And your stories of human goodness and caring were lovely. Reassuring in these often unsettling days and times. Hugging everyone tight tonight and sending hugs your way too!

Jane, I am so sorry that you experienced such a traumatic family event. Life is fragile and uncertain. The blink of an eye is certainly the way life can move. Take deep breaths when thoughts interfer. Have a safe weekend.

That sounds so scary! I’m glad you had help from strangers. When we wake up in the morning, we think we have an idea how our day will go, but the unexpected can pop up any time. “Try to hold on tight” is right.

You’re right, life can change in a blink. What a scary moment. So glad it ended well and you were surrounded by the kindness of strangers.

Hooray for the kiddos that help us remember that more human beings are good than bad. Yes, I will hug my dear ones close. Yesterday, I was driving my youngest (eeep!) home from college for fall break and drove past a nasty multi-car accident in which there was at least severe injury. My goodness…every moment is really precious. Thanks for sending us a beautiful image of autumn.

So scary! But I love that so many people came to help. What a comfort.
