What Are You Reading? 06/17/24

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly blog hop co-hosted by Unleashing Readers and Teach Mentor Texts which focuses on sharing books marketed for children and young adults. It offers opportunities to share and recommend books with each other.

I’ve been zipping around visiting local schools in support of the summer reading program at our library, and I’ve had the opportunity to read some fun, short books with some super fun kiddos! Here are a few books I brought with me to visits this past week.

That Is Not a Good Idea

I love this book. It’s not for all audiences, that’s for sure, and I don’t typically read it with the Kindergarteners, as the ending can be a bit upsetting for more sensitive readers. But for the older kiddos, especially those who might roll their eyes and think that picture books are for babies, this dark tale with a superb twist ending is an absolute delight.

Don’t Push the Button

Now this is a book I absolutely share with my kindies – they love being a bit naughty and pushing that bright red button! I love a good interactive book, and this is one of the best. I’m not sold on the many, many follow ups, but the original has never let me down.

Count the Monkeys

Can you tell I like interactive books? Keeping everyone focused on a presentation, especially towards the end of the school year, can be a real challenge, so getting kids involved in a story can really help keep pull everyone back in when their minds have started to wander. I love Mac Barnett, and this book is fantastic for older primary kiddos.

Fluffy McWhiskers: Cuteness Explosion

This is another book I like sharing with the older elementary crowd, because it’s just so dramatic and over-the-top. Lots of colourful explosions in this deceptively cute book about a fatally-adorable kitten.

Summer is the busiest time of year for a children’s librarian, but also the most fun – I’m looking forward to the craziness, zaniness, messiness and excitement!

Hi Jane, I didn’t know you had posted until you came by my post! Thanks for that & thanks for these books for younger readers. I did bookmark some as I have a grand-niece who will enjoy them! Thanks for the Mo Willems, good to know about it, too!

I sometimes forget that Mo Willems has done more than Elephant and Piggie and the Pigeon books, I’m surprised when I come across his one-off books! But of course, as you’d expect, they’re always good. 🙂

I am a huge fan of Count the Monkeys and That Is Not a Good Idea and don’t know the other two so definitely adding them to my list! Fluffy McWhiskers looks especially excellent.
