Picture Book Share: From 1 to 10

July 7, 2020July 7, 2020 Jane the Raincity Librarian 2 comments

We don’t have a huge selection concept books on our bookshelves – ABCs, 123s, animals and colours and shapes – so the same few books tend to get read over, and over, and over again. Developmentally this is a very good thing, as repetition reinforces vocabulary, but I have to admit that mummy and daddy were pretty happy to receive a new counting book from the lovely folks at Pajama Press – the cute and quirky FROM 1 TO 10!

We received this review copy for free, and as is the case with all the reviews on this blog I receive no compensation for writing about it, nor am I under any obligation to do so. To be fully honest, this PR copy arrived AGES ago, and I’m just now getting around to sharing it – yet more proof that I am not a professional blogger! Pajama Press published my three picture books, but I still only share books I actually enjoy and would recommend.

I wasn’t familiar with Mies van Hout’s work before reading FROM 1 TO 10 and I’m definitely interested in checking out more of their art, as it has a very distinct, almost childlike feeling of simplicity that is very appealing, particularly in a picture book. The bold, simple lines, bright colours and large shapes are perfect for the youngest readers, and the different countable elements are easy to point out when reading the book aloud.

While reading FROM 1 TO 10 aloud with baby, my librarian hat immediately popped on, and I realized what a fun project it would be to have kids create their own counting books – they could pick any theme they liked and let their creativity soar. How about 9 Pikachus, or 8 snowboarders or 7 ice cream cones? A sports theme, a video game theme, a food theme, a music theme, the possibilities are endless. We could do a colour concept book, too – yellow for Pikachu, brown for chocolate cake, pink for Barbie’s convertible, orange for Tony the Tiger. We could even then add them to the collection in the branch, so the kids could have the thrill of seeing their books on the library shelf.  How much fun would that be? Thanks for the inspiration!

Like The Haircut, FROM 1 TO 10 has reinforced pages, rounded corners and a padded cover. We have put its sturdiness through rigorous testing….😅

Thanks again, Pajama Press, for sharing this delightful counting book with us, we really enjoyed it, and we hope you will, too!
