Poetry Friday: Greetings from Japan

Hello, friends, and welcome to Poetry Friday! I’m thrilled to be hosting today, for the very first time!

If we haven’t met before, my name is Jane, and I am the Raincity Librarian! Thank you so much for stopping by my corner of the internet this week, it’s lovely to have you here.

I’m preparing this post ahead of time, because by the time you read this, I’ll be in…..

OSAKA, JAPAN!

My partner and I love Osaka – we first visited this foodie city in December 2016, and we loved it so very much that we just had to come back. We’re here in Japan for two weeks, and we’ll be staying in Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka, eating and drinking all of the delicious things that Japan has to offer!

And so, allow me to re-use two haikus I wrote during my last trip to Japan, back in 2016. The sentiments still very much apply!

Exploring the world,

Walking, eating and drinking,

Sleep is for the weak!

………………………….

A taste of this, and

A nibble of that, with a

Sip to wash it down!

    At TeachingAuthors we’re celebrating our annual 3 Weeks of Thanks-giving, honoring teachers or authors to whom we’re grateful. I’m thanking author and revolutionary librarian Jella Lepman, who created the International Youth Library and IBBY–International Board on Books for Young People. An amazing woman, she’s inspired me to keep fighting for what’s right…and my poem reflects that.

  4. Jane, it is so exciting to get this post from Japan. Have a wonderful holiday. The food and drink look very interesting. LOL with your thought sleep is for the weak.   7. Hi Jane! I am so thrilled for you! I’ve never been to Japan and I’ve always wanted to go. My partner was deployed in Japan for two years when he was in the Air Force. He worked at the fire department of the Yokota Air Force Base. Happy to hear that you got to visit again! “Sleep is for the weak” is right! Have a fabulous time! =)

    1. The Kansai region is a favourite of ours, this is our second trip to Osaka, and third to Tokyo, and if we have our way, it won’t be our last!

  18. Have a wonderful trip. Japan is on my bucket list of places to visit.

    While you’re sampling dishes in Osaka, I’m baking peanut butter cookies. I entered my recipe for spicy PB cookies in a contest recently. They didn’t win, so I’m sharing the recipe, along with Edwin Romond’s memory poem “Peanut Butter Cookies,” and my own Golden Shovel poem, taken from Romond’s first line.
