Poetry Friday : A Cup of Tea for You and Me

October 27, 2017 Jane the Raincity Librarian 11 comments

My name is Jane, and I am addicted to tea.

It’s true! I can’t seem to function without at least two cups of strong black tea (with milk, please) flowing through my system.

I’ve had a very difficult past few months, and few things have brought me as much comfort as a steaming hot cup of tea enjoyed with good friends and dear family members.

And so, please accept this simple ode to tea, written by yours truly.

Pop the Kettle On

Pop the kettle on, dear,

Pop the kettle on,

Let’s make some tea for you and me,

Pop the kettle on.

Tea goes in the pot, dear,

Tea goes in the pot,

A bag or two, for me and you,

Tea goes in the pot.

Steep it very strong, dear,

Steep it very strong,

Have a seat, put up your feet,

Steep it very strong,

Add a splash of milk, dear,

Add a splash of milk,

A lemon slice is also nice,

Add a splash of milk,

Drink it with a friend, dear,

Drink it with a friend,

So much to say, we’ll chat all day,

Drink it with a friend.

I hope with your book coming soon that it and the cups of tea do make life better, Jane. I love sweet hot tea, and your poem shows just how important a cuppa is.

Ah, it is now almost chilly enough to get my evening tea back in the routine! I’m an evening tea drinker. Mornings I just can’t do it! Coffee only before noon, please!

Tea time is a special time – this poem captured the coziness of it so well.

I love the voice in this Jane, and the repetition. May creamy black tea and friends sustain you in every season!

That poem has wonderful rhythm. I also need my tea. I have my different teas for different moods. Green for reflection. Constant Comment for a morning boost. Black tea to shake a black mood. Tea is never the wrong answer.

Wow, Jane, I LOVE your poem. It’s got everything–rhythm, rhyme (and the rhymes inside), repetition, and a great subject. I’ll take black tea with milk over everything else.

I wish you many warm cups of tea and even warmer visits with friends. I grew up in the South drinking strong, sweet iced tea, but now start each morning with a cup of green tea and end many evenings with herbal tea and love all kinds of tea in between. I enjoyed your sweet ode to tea–such soothing rhythms.
