Review: Professional Crocodile

October 17, 2017October 17, 2017 Jane the Raincity Librarian 2 comments

Mr. Crocodile loves his job. Every morning he gets up with an alarm. He brushes his teeth. He chooses the right tie to match his outfit, eats a quick slice of toast, and heads off to work on a crowded train. But what exactly is his job? The answer may surprise you! Readers will want to pore over this witty, wordless book again and again, finding new details and fresh stories with every reading.

Professional Crocodile takes us along with a professional crocodile as he crosses the city on his daily commute to the office. Mr. Crocodile stumbles out of bed in his striped pajamas, enjoys his breakfast of toast and coffee, picks out just the right tie, and heads off into the bustling city. All around him people go about their everyday lives, walking and biking and driving and riding the train, seemingly oblivious to the well-dressed reptile among them. Everyone is fully absorbed in their own world, reading, looking at their phone, listening to music, though here and there a child seems to notice Mr. Crocodile (and some other fellow animals) making their commutes.

This wordless picture book is absolutely brimming with details – every spread is filled with so many different things to see and explore. Children will adore pouring over each page and pointing out all the little treasures hidden in the illustrations, and will no doubt love to make up their own stories about Mr. Crocodile and the people he meets along his commute.

Elegant, sophisticated, witty and charming, with a fun twist ending, Professional Crocodile is definitely worth seeking out.

Isn’t it just so fascinating? I’m glad that we get picture books from overseas, they’re often so imaginative.
