Poetry Friday : Wild One Sneak Peak!

We’re just two months away from the arrival of my debut picture book Wild One (November 1st in Canada – sorry, America, you’ll just have to wait until March 2018!), and I can hardly believe it. Wild One has been almost two years in the making, and I can’t believe I’ll be able to hold her in my hands in just two months! To be honest it all still feels a bit like a dream, and not quite real.

Just can’t wait until November (or March)? Well you’re in luck, because my publisher has given me permission to share a sneaky little peak at the inside of my book!

I shared my deep and abiding love for rhyme and repetition in last week’s Poetry Friday post, so it should come as no surprise that Wild One heavily features both rhyme and repetition. As a children’s librarian it was very important to me that my story help support the development of strong early literacy skills in young readers, so of course I had to fit in as many tricks of the trade as possible!

The phrase Wild One is repeated throughout the rhyming text, which introduces plenty of action words and animal vocabulary in a colourful package that also encourages audience participation. In other words, it’s written by a storytimer for storytimers. 🙂

Without further ado, let’s meet my dear little Wild One!

Isn’t she adorable? She’s just bursting with energy and enthusiasm, just like the little ones at my programs who inspire me every day.

I hope you’re as excited to meet Wild One as I am to share her with you this November (or March)! And a big thank you to all my Poetry Friday friends for helping me hone and develop my craft as a poet and picture book writer, and for always inspiring me with your creativity and insight.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

How exciting! Wild One looks like lots of fun–and reminds me of my daughter, who was quite a wild one herself.
