Review: Imagine That!

September 12, 2017September 8, 2017 Jane the Raincity Librarian 2 comments

Mommy and Lila are going to visit Grandpa, but Lila is busy playing in her own imaginary world. Whenever Mommy asks her what she is doing, she always says, “Nothing!” Only Lila can see that she’s really wrestling an octopus, racing along in a winged chariot, and flying with birds over a noisy jungle.

But playing by yourself can get lonely. So Grandpa decides to join Lila–because using your imagination is even more fun when you play together!

Bursting with energy and color, this is a joyous celebration of the imagination and creativity that will speak to child and adult alike.

Ever wonder what’s going on in the mind of a small child? The answer is – more than you can imagine! Lila’s mind is bursting with imagination, and turns boring, everyday activities into incredible adventures! It turns out that daydreams aren’t just for little kids, though – sometimes even grandpas can get in on the fun!

I love Lila – this is one spunky, feisty, loveable little girl. Her daydreams find her wrestling a fearsome octopus, climbing like a giant up the side of a tower, racing at breakneck speed in a wild chariot, and more. I truly appreciated the fact that author/illustrator Yasmeen Ismail creates a little girl who isn’t afraid to get wild and crazy – why should little boys have all the fun?! The illustrations wonderfully capture Lila’s determination and fiery personality.

In a way, Imagine That! is also an ode to quiet children everywhere, who may not always express themselves verbally or through actions, but who can be just as imaginative and creative as their more vociferous peers.

The interaction between Lila and Grandpa is lovely, and a wonderful reminder to all of us grownups not to take life too seriously, and to never be so busy or wrapped up in grownup things that we can’t take the time to play make-believe with the children in our lives. We were all children once, and that ability to imagine, be silly and have fun is still hidden away inside of all of us, just waiting to be set free!

Imagine That! is beautifully illustrated, utterly charming, wonderfully imaginative, and most important of all, lots of fun.
