Poetry Friday: Rain, Rain, Go Away

April 7, 2017April 14, 2017 Jane the Raincity Librarian 37 comments

It’s raining. Again. It’s been raining for a few days now, and it will likely be raining for many, many days to come. In case you’ve ever wondered, there is indeed a very good reason why I chose to call my blog Raincity Librarian. My hometown of Vancouver, Canada is indeed a rainy, rainy city. Last October, for example, it rained 29 out of 31 days. We broke a record! But we weren’t satisfied by that, oh no. In November it went on to rain for another 25 days. We had FIVE DAYS without rain in TWO MONTHS.

In other words, I live in a rainy climate.

You’d think that after 30 years in this rainy city (2017 marks the 30th anniversary of my family’s move from Ontario to British Columbia!) I’d be used to the rain.

But I’m not.

Not. At. All.

I’m afraid I have no words of wit or wisdom with which to honour Poetry Month this week, but please enjoy this short snippet of rain-themed poetry. Happy Friday, may your weekend be less soggy than mine is likely to be!

I love your rainy poem Jane, it gave me a good chuckle! I especially liked the mildew and puddle duck, and your colored raindrops are divine. Today was the first day this week the sun came out a little bit, we had rain the last few days, but I’m not going to complain about my rain after hearing about all your rain. Sending thoughts for some sunshine your way.

Sometimes you just have to find the humour in the situation, even when you’re soaked through and through! 🙂

I love that sad, drenched feline face. Don your raincoat and go stomp through some puddles. You’ll feel better.

You’re very right. I visited a preschool yesterday, and had to smile – all the little ones were in their bright yellow rain suits, splashing and stomping and laughing like they hadn’t a care in the world.

OH you puddle duck you! My son LOVES rain. I wonder if he would love it after 2 months. 🙂 That cheetah pic kills me! Sending you a bright red umbrella today! xo

That’s the thing, isn’t it – I don’t mind a rainy day or two, but boy oh boy, even I have my limits! I did treat myself to bright yellow gumboots a while back, and they do help ease the pain – it’s hard to be too grumpy when you’re splashing through puddles in bright yellow gumboots!

I love the rainy poem, but I’m not sure how well I would survive in such a rainy climate. Winters are gray (but not always rainy/snowy) here in the Midwest and I live for the days we have sunshine. The best part of spring is not just the warming temps, but the addition of color to my world.

I absolutely agree with you – after a long, grey winter I find myself just craving colour, and I’ve started to spot tiny buds on trees, which are filling me with hope for colourful days to come!!

What a difference in climate! Even in Missouri where we had much more rain, I don’t think we ever came close to yours. We are begging for it here in Denver. Send some drops our way! Love that cute poem!

When you grow up on the “Wet” Coast, it can be hard to comprehend what a drought looks like – we get so much more rain than we typically know what to do with!

      Rain, rain, go away,
      Denver needs you anyway!

Here’s hoping these clouds find their way over to your neck of the woods, Linda!

Turning into a puddle duck might be the best possible outcome in such a wet setting! Rain, rain, rain in Wisconsin lately as well, but we’ve got glorious sunshine today. Hope you’ll see some soon!

I never did get used to the rain. Ever.
    Hang in there.

Oh, goodness, Jane, I’m sorry. I don’t think I could handle that much rain…ever. Living in the desert has its own challenges (115 degree heat!) but I’d take the heat over endless wet. Despite your misery, your poem is pretty spectacular: “…growing mildew, too” – hee-hee! =)

We’ve had more than our usual share of rain here in the Chicago area, too, but I don’t think I could take all the rain you get in Vancouver! So glad you’re able to look at it with humor. Love the line in your poem about mildew. Wish I could send you some sunshine–we finally have it here today.

We’ve been having A LOT of rain here lately so I can relate to the poem you posted. I don’t mind a spring shower, but thunderstorms…No! Your little videos are so cute. Wishing you some sunny days ahead!

That is a lot of rain-days! Of late, we get our rain in deluges. Then flood. (Last weekend.) And when the water goes down, life goes on. I would share your frustration with all that rain. But I love your poem – especially that puddle duck! Keep smiling. 🙂

You just have to keep on smiling, even through the rain, or else you’re going to be wearing a frown for pretty much the entire year! 😉

Lots of rain here in the Seattle area too! It’s been a wetter than usual winter/spring. I crave sunshine, so I totally understand your growing-mildew blue self who wishes she were still in bed.

Wow, 5 days without rain in two months. I knew Vancouver was rainy of course, but dang, I didn’t realize it was *that* rainy. Thank goodness you have a good sense of humour about it all Jane, because otherwise I don’t know how you’d manage…probably by looking an awful lot like Stitch!

We’re coming off a drought, but anything more than two days in a row of rain seems to get old quickly. We never seem to be satisfied, do we? I hope you get a break soon, though, you deserve it.

So very true – in winter I was complaining about the snow, and I’m sure once summer comes I’ll be complaining about the heat!! It does give me poetry fodder, though. 😉

Ha! I saw your post title and thought, I’ll bet that’s raincity librarian. Loved your poem. And, as someone who loves just a bit down the road, I can say, yes indeed, we are…
    growing mildew between our toes
    algae in our hair
    mud and dancing puddles
    pretty much everywhere!
… as I keep an eye on the roof and rain drain beside my office window, to catch a break in the douse so I can go for a walk.

I like rain, but one year I lived in a state where it rained for six months straight and that sorely tested my affection for it (there was a flood shortly after I left). I’ll bet that properly cheery accessories do help! That and being able to laugh at your mildew 🙂

I’m simply having fun saying “puddle duck” over and over. 🙂 I grew up in New Mexico (no rain) and have lived in Florida and Mississippi (loads of rain). I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to so much gray and wet after a desert childhood!

Too much rain makes me blue also. Thankfully, we’ve had a few days of sunshine after what seemed like a month of rain. I love that you found the “sunny side” of the weather and treated us to your fun poem. Wishing you sunny days, Jane!
