Poetry Friday – Winter’s Four-Letter Word

March 3, 2017April 14, 2017 Jane the Raincity Librarian 28 comments

Snow.

It’s the ultimate winter four-letter word. This has been one of the coldest, snowiest winters in recorded history here in Vancouver, and I for one am absolutely, totally, one-hundred percent over it.

We had a few scattered flurries earlier this week, and I was not thrilled. Not thrilled at all. Vancouver is not a snow-friendly community. A few inches of white stuff on the ground and the entire city shuts down. A few more inches of snow and civilization as we know it grinds to a halt. Any more snow and they have to call in the National Guard to keep us from destroying ourselves and everything we hold dear (OK, I might have made that part up, but you get the picture).

ENOUGH . WITH . THE . SNOW

Looking outside my window this week, I was inspired to pen a few words to express my indignation.

Hopefully March will usher in the beginning of spring, and kick this yucky winter out on its backside! Happy Friday, everyone!

It looks like you get that nice wet snow. Not so deep as it is heavy. I hate slush. That snow is actually a five-letter word – a four-letter word plus one! Beautiful images, but hope better weather springs forth soon! We are getting good melting days lately on the east coast, and hopefully it will stay that way. I’m ready for a crocus circus. Oooh, a poem! I can feel a poem coming on!

Oh yes, spring is a perfect time for poetry, with so much new life springing up all around us there’s inspiration everywhere!

Ha! I have never lived somewhere where it snowed regularly, but I can imagine the weariness… wishing you daffodils! xo

I don’t normally live somewhere where it snows regularly, either, which makes it all the more frustrating! Here’s hoping for daffodils soon! 🙂

Loved to catch your wing and fly to Montego Bay, reminds me of the song “Montego Bay,” by Bobby Bloom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUADi8kGxS8. Wonderful little ditty about the snow, hope it leaves your area soon! Though I have to say I love your snow pics they are very dramatic!

I’m lucky enough to live right next to a big urban park, which means I get a beautiful view of a forest every day! 🙂 I’ve never actually been to Montego Bay, but I have to be to Jamaica, and that blue water is something else! 🙂

I love your poem, it accurately conveys the true frustration felt in adult life over snow. I mean, a small part of me wants to be shocked that you aren’t more excited about snowfall because it’s such a rarity here in the UK that it’s sort of celebrated, but then I remember the sheer chaos a few flakes cause and what a nightmare it actually is when snow days from school aren’t a thing anymore.

Snowfall is a major rarity here in southwestern Canada, which is what makes it so awful! A little sprinkling here and there is fine, but any more than that and everything collapses! We’re pretty much the wimps of Canada, the most un-traditionally Canadian part of the country! 😉

Love your ditty protesting snow! I so agree with you. More snow is an awful bother because its uncommonness and my city’s unequippedness (Just make up words for emphasis, right?) makes for an unpreparedness that is tiring after a couple times.

I completely agree! When we visited northern Japan we stayed in cities that get feet of snow for months on end, but because they’re used to the snow everyone manages just fine!

I totally share your views on snow. I like looking at pictures of it, but I don’t want to get much closer than that. Feel free to drop in on me in the Caribbean!

We have not had a measurable snow yet…the yet is what scares me. It is not unusual to have a wintery March. I wanted a snow a few weeks ago, but now that we have had 60-70 degree weather, I don’t want it. Wishing you warm, springy thoughts!

For us, it’s unusual to have snow as late as February, so this is absolutely nutters! I’ll happily take some of those warm, springy thoughts – enough with the winter!!

This post made me laugh, Jane! Especially that part about the National Guard. It’s been a long time since I’ve lived with snow, but your post brought back some not-so-fond memories of my old Boston days. Sending Florida sunshine your way….

I’ll take some of your snow! WE got GYPPED here in Virginia. A few flurries yesterday morning … but nothing that would stick the entire season. I’m so bummed. And, this is the first year in a loooooooooooooong time I’ve seen a school year without a snow day!

But, I understand. When you are done, you are done. Sounds like spring fever is in your blood. I wish you an all expenses paid trip to Montego Bay. Maybe this poem would win you one?!

I’m with Linda — I would gladly have taken some of your snow for Ohio! I guess the moral of the story is that too much of a good thing is just that — too much!

Beautiful photos and a fun poem! We haven’t had any snow days (I think I live in the same general vicinity as Linda M.) and that has not gone over well with kids or teachers!

Adding some coastal Carolina sunshine to Michelle’s Florida rays… hang in there, Jane! At least you’ve kept your sense of humor. Hopefully Donna’s crocus circus will show up before too much longer….

    Hi, Jane–

From the DC area I write with sympathy remembering those years when “it starts out all fun and games,” a dusting here, a few inches there, and then relentlessly it keeps piling up until you wish snow didn’t exist! This year was NOT like that. Maybe I’ll write a companion poem…

Snow keeps staying in the sky.
Makes me want to scream and cry.
    I simply haven’t had enough
Of frozen cold and flaky stuff.
    If I could I’d take a Hoover,
suck up the snow of poor Vancouver
And dump it on DC instead.
What foolish notions fill my head!

    : ) : ) : )
Thanks for visiting this week, and so glad to have facilitated your discovery of Billy Collins!
